Depression can be described as heavy, down, hopeless, unmotivated, and we stop grabbing at life. There is a stillness in our minds. We forget family and friends. Our world becomes colorless. It's a feeling we've all experienced in some form or shape in our lives, it touches us all. When clients come in experiencing depression, they’ve already taken the first step towards recovery; It also sets the structure for the active work that will be required. Treatment can then involve challenging thinking/behavioral patterns that will get clients back to doing what they used to do and feel joy and pleasure in a new way.
Anxiety can present itself for many reasons but we usually interpret it as dangerous. Avoidance behaviors become so overwhelming that we are no longer able to function. But anxiety can also be working for us as a protective factor or when we need to pay attention to something important.
Treatment will provide a safe and supportive environment to manage these symptoms, confront what we fear, and develop effective coping strategies to help us return to living more fuller lives.
